Visiting: The Family Room

Posted in DC Life by

I love visiting new places in my area.  As busy as I am, it’s nice to take a step back and enjoy what’s being offered in my own backyard (so to speak). I don’t remember how I found out about The Family Room, but once I visited their instagram (thefamilyroomlaytonsville) page, I knew that I had to visit!

The Family Room aka TFR is a family-friendly home/gift boutique / coffee shop aka gathering place (visit their About Us page). When I saw the visuals and read about them, I appreciated the idea of community. A place for guests to relax, enjoy others’ company, and be productive. Last Friday, I decided to visit. For those who don’t know, outside of my dance teaching/choreographing, I have other jobs that I have the luxury of doing most of the work at home — which is fantabulous — but it’s nice to do the work in a different environment. To spice things up.

The weather was warm but enjoyable so I took the drive up to Laytonsville. The layout of the store has a great hometown feel, which appealed to me. Check out the store front. Bright and friendly. As I walked in, I was immediately greeted. The ladies were super nice, ready to help and offer suggestions if a guest needed them.

I ordered an iced coffee and set up my laptop by the window. With the soft tunes playing, I was able to edit photos and answer emails. Already, I found a new place to be my office away from home.  After a while, I walked around to peruse – they have plenty of items that you can purchase as gifts or something to decorate / add to your living space.

FYI –  The kids’ section is adorable! Two comfy chairs. A table to sit at, play checkers, or work on a puzzle. Plenty of books to read. They also sell sandwiches and snacks, as well as ice cream. So, if you wanted to meet a friend or bring your family, there is plenty to do. There are so many cool touches that make this space come to life.

According to the website, they host events and will be organizing a Farmers’ Market this summer and fall. So if you’re in the upper Montgomery County area, looking for a venue that has fun activities, check them out!

I snapped a video for my Instagram stories and then my friend who lives nearby, invited me over to hang out — how awesome is that? So it was a great Friday afternoon.

As I’ve gotten older, I realize how important it is to support local businesses. I know we all tend to say “oh yeah, eat/shop local”. But if we find a place that blesses us and helps us along, we should be there for them.

Excited to see The Family Room grow in the community and hear about what they do next!

I’m so glad you took me up on my offer! Michael still talks about missing “Melnie” while she’s at work, which cracks me up! He’s missed you since before he knew you!
