That’s My Song: Rocket Love (Stevie Wonder)

It’s almost the weekend. Woohoo!

When I get asked, it’s very hard to pick favorite Stevie Wonder songs. But this week’s pick – Rocket Love – is in my Top 5.  Not a popular selection that most people would think of when they think of Stevie, but it’s still worth checking out.

It’s a sad love song, but it’s brilliant. The symbolism in the lyrics, then the music itself, with the piano and the strings coming together.  Poignant and beautiful.  The song begins, taking you to the highs of highs, then slams you down to reality, just like that.  Just like real life, right? Definitely pay attention the words as you listen to the song.

Here’s the chorus: You took me riding in your rocket, gave me a star/But at a half a mile from Heaven, you dropped me back down to this cold, cold world.

Every time I listen, I find something new. A series of piano chords that impress me or a lyric that makes more sense. I love how a song can do that.

The live version is superb too – listen for the details in the instruments (bass, other parts) and his vocal arrangement.  So good!

Have a great weekend, everybody. 🙂
