Yesterday was Carole King’s birthday (February 9th)! I don’t know about you but she’s one of my favorite artists. With an amazing gift of songwriting, Carole has been an influence to many. Do you know that she wrote songs for other singers and groups before her solo career began? Not just ok songs…great songs. Check out these lists: x and x.
Maybe it’s just me, but her voice is very recognizable. She has this soulful grit and I adore it. You feel what she’s singing about, even if you don’t always relate to the lyrics. Another fun fact: she sung the theme song for Gilmore Girls with her daughter. Also, her life and music became the subject of a Tony-Award winning musical called Beautiful.
Today, I’m sharing one of my absolute favorite songs from her album, Tapestry (a classic record that I recommend that everyone listen to. It’s a masterpiece). “It’s Too Late” is a sad song, but the combination of lyrics (written by Toni Stern) and musicality just hit me every time. Carole’s voice adds an incredible element that makes the song work. Y’all know I’m a sucker for chord progressions and surprises that pop up during a composition. Tugs on the heartstrings for me. This is perfect.
Have you heard the rendition on Live at the Troubadour with James Taylor? Ohmylanta, after I saw the PBS special back in 2010, I immediately bought the CD. IMMEDIATELY. It’s so good. Because when two of your all-time favorite singer/songwriters do a project together, you have to make moves. (We’ll talk about Mr. James another day!)
When she scats in the middle of the song (not once but twice), be still my heart.
Ok, enough gushing! Do you have a favorite Carole King song? Let me know.
I hope you have a great weekend!
