I don’t remember the day I first heard this song, but as soon as I did, I knew I would keep listening. The song is “Distance”. It begins with a soft introduction, then leads you into a steady groove, with lyrics that pull you in.
Y’all… Emily King is a soulful jewel of a woman. Both her latest EP (Seven) and LP (The Switch) are amazing. Thankfully, because of “Distance”, I was able to check out the EP and then when The Switch arrived a few months later, I was all in.
When I Google’d her last year, I found out that her parents are jazz musicians, and she received a Grammy nomination for her first EP, East Side Story, so she isn’t new, but she’s finally getting recognized more these days.
I’m trying to think of ways to describe her voice – it’s rich, shy, gritty, jazzy. Very distinctive, in my kind. Her alto range reminds me of Alicia Keys…but better (don’t shoot!).
The lyrics she writes…wow. Amazing storytelling. You’ll find gold in each song, depending on your mood and the day you listen. I love that about good songwriting.
Back to “Distance”. It’s like a love song, but it’s realistic. Distance makes the heart grow… It’s so sweet and lovely. But ten when you hear this line: I wanna love you/Don’t wanna try to change the pace of your life… WOW! How’s that for keepin’ it real?
Listen. 🙂
I want to see her in concert in July at the 9:30 club, so I’ll need to buy a ticket soon!
Check her out! I guarantee you’ll enjoy it.
Have a great weekend, everybody!
