I treat myself to a mani/pedi about twice a year. Wait, let me clarify. Usually, I do my nails at home, but it’s nice to get them professionally done every once in a while. Since it was a birthday gift to myself, I decided to book an appointment at Varnish Lane.
Settled in an adorable yellow building literally right over the MD/DC border, Varnish Lane offers waterless manicures and pedicures, and other spa treatments. (such as waxing). VL only uses toxic-free polishes, essential oils, and other specialty products during appointments. Here is their page about why they do waterless.
After hearing great things when they opened, I visited for the first time in 2015. I enjoyed it but I never got a chance to return until a few weeks ago.
Finally did it.
I went to the salon on Friday and got my first gel manicure.
I live for a dark polish in the fall. It’s trendy but never fails to come through. Greys, blood reds, dark blues, black. Muted and rich tones. To me, it reads cool and sophisticated. Last year, I mentioned that I was wearing Chinchilly and Wicked by Essie. That hasn’t changed, but I have introduced a few more colors to my repertoire.
I honestly believe that I feel better when I have nail polish on my fingers and toes. Manicures are my thang.
I just bought the newest addition to my collection: Essie‘s Topless and Barefoot. Thanks to a recent post from them on my Instagram feed, I decided I would check it out. I’m always looking for a neutral color that compliments me. This shade is a light and pretty nude, and reminds me of the beach. While I was enjoying my lazy Tuesday evening, watching YouTube videos, I was able to give myself a manicure. Nicely done with two coats and topped with the Gel Setter.
The shade is so cute! It’s going to be one of my frequent bottles this spring and summer. Once I get out more in the sun and get a little darker, it will make my nails will pop more. (Contrast!)
These bottles are also in my rotation:
Lately, Essie has been my regular brand. I know there are others – but with the Gel Setter I have, it’s been easier to stick with it, and I’m satisfied with the results. $10 is the max I’ll spend on polishes right now. Remember – always compare prices at the drugstores and all-in-one places, so you can find the best deal for your buck.
What brands and colors are you’re enjoying? Any nude/neutrals you prefer? Let me know! I’m all about finding a new polish! 🙂
Gotta love a nice manicure and pedicure. It’s one of the ways I “treat” myself after a long teaching year or for a special occasion. (Psst: I hadn’t gotten my nails professionally until last year. Crazy, right?) As much as I enjoy being pampered, I buy my own nail polish or borrow one of my sisters’ bottles, and transform my digits. Yes, it’s cost effective, but I’m the kind of girl who will either wear a shade for several weeks or change it up after a few days. And I have some me time.
